What Does “Spec” Stand For?

One of the questions we hear most often is, “What does ‘Spec’ stand for?”

SPEC is an acronym for Social, Political, Economic and Cultural—the four pillars that have guided our journalism since the newspaper was founded in 1975. They reflect the broad range of stories we cover and our commitment to keeping readers informed about the issues and events that shape life on the Gaspé Coast.

While The Gaspé Spec was established to serve the English-speaking communities of the region, our readership has grown over the years. Today, the newspaper is also read by many francophones who appreciate its unique perspective and comprehensive coverage of local and regional news.

For more than 50 years, The Gaspé Spec has remained committed to informing, connecting and celebrating the communities of the Gaspé Coast through trusted, community-focused journalism.
