Regional update: one new case of COVID-19

Covid-19

MARIA – The Gaspé Peninsula and the Magdalen Islands Public Health Board is reporting one new case of COVID-19, bringing the total to 173.

The case is not tied to any of the main epidemiological clusters already identified in the region. Those main epidemiological clusters include the Manoir du Havre (Maria), the Residence Saint Joseph (Maria), and two IGA grocery stores (Paspebiac and New Richmond).  It is the fourth new case of COVID-19 in the last 10 days in the region.

There are no new casualties, the total so far is eight. The total number of hospitalizations stands at 16.  However, the one patient that was still hospitalized is now in intensive care in Rimouski.

The Public Health Board is also reporting an increase in the number of health care workers who have contracted COVID-19, from 41 to 43.

However, this does not mean that the new case is a health care worker.  The reason for the increase is that the statistics regarding the health care sector are not updated daily, they are only updated occasionally by the Public Health Board. Those new cases (health sector) likely involve individuals who work in private residences since the number of employees of the Integrated Health and Social Services Centre who have contracted COVID-19 is still 16.

The breakdown of the 173 cases by health region (containing a hospital) is as follows:

  • Bay of Chaleur sector – 130 (an increase of 1)
  • Rocher-Percé sector – 27 (stable)
  • Magdalen Islands – 9 (stable)
  • Côte-de-Gaspé – 5 (stable)
  • Haute-Gaspésie – 2 (stable)

Note: The Public Health Board does not release numbers in a sector if the number of cases is less than five.  The total of confirmed cases in a health region does not always correspond to the sum of cases in that health region (RLS) due to unknown values, data entry errors or transfers between regions. The total in one health region won’t necessarily correspond with the total for the outbreaks in that health region, since some cases are located (reside) in other health regions.
