Regional update: Three new cases reported today, 55 active cases remain in the region

There are 3 new cases of COVID-19 in the region. Two of the new cases are in the Bonaventure MRC and one in the Rocher-Percé MRC.

Public Health states that the difference between provincial and regional statistics can be explained by the rapidly changing situation and that adjustments will be made over the next few days.

The Gaspé Peninsula will switch to Alert Level 4 – Red and the Magdalen Islands region will change to Alert Level 3 – Orange effective December 17 to January 10 inclusive.

Red Zone: Indoor and outdoor private gatherings in regions and territories are prohibited between December 17 and January 10 inclusively. However, during this period, those who live alone or are single parents may join another family bubble (always the same one) during this time. Orange Zone: Gatherings of no more than six people will be permitted. For these regions, it is recommended to do a voluntary confinement, one week before and one week after the time of the gatherings. In addition to the measures associated with the alert levels, the following holiday restrictions will also be effective:

  • Large box stores will only be able to sell priority items (groceries, sanitary items, pharmaceuticals, pet food, etc.) – December 25 to January 10 inclusive
  • Office parties are prohibited
  • Office telework is mandatory except for workers whose physical presence is deemed by their employer to be required to maintain the ongoing activities of a public or private organization – December 17 to January 10 inclusive
  • Childcare services (daycares, CPE and family care) will remain open. However, in order to limit contact during the Christmas holidays, families are advised to keep their children at home as much as possible and so inform their childcare provider beforehand. 
  • As for preschool and elementary school students, they will stay home, and distance learning services will be provided from December 17 to January 10 inclusively.
  • Secondary school students will stay home and distance learning services, according to the usual schedule, will be provided from December 17 to January 10 inclusively.
  • Sports and Recreation: Outdoor group sports, cultural and recreational activities are permitted in public settings, including courses, fitness training and guided activities, whether alone, as a family or in groups that have no more than eight participants plus one supervisor and as long as everyone stays at least 2 metres away from the other participants. Traffic must be managed in controlled access outdoor settings. In freely accessible locations, the maximum number of attendees must be posted, along with a reminder of health regulations.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the Gaspé Peninsula and Magdalen Islands is now 1,539 (+3). Presently, 1,441 (+7) individuals have recovered. There are 55 (-4) active cases in the region. The total number of deaths is 43 (stable). There are currently 7 (+1) individuals hospitalized.

Percé Detention Centre

Fourteen (stable) employees and fourteen (stable) inmates at the Percé Detention Centre have tested positive for COVID-19. Nine (stable) employees and thirteen (+1) inmate have recovered from the virus. Twenty individuals are currently being detained at the Percé Facility.

*Ten deaths occurred in the last 24 hours, one death occurred before December 15, fourteen deaths occurred between December 15 and December 20 and three deaths occurred at an unknown date.


The following are no longer considered outbreaks:

CHSLD in Maria (Residence Saint-Joseph)no longer considered an outbreak: 24 residents and 22 staff members tested positive for COVID-19. Eleven residents passed away as a result of Covid-19. Ninety-one residents and nearly 130 employees work there.

Maria Hospital – no longer considered an outbreak: Ten employees tested positive and no patients were involved in the outbreak.

Lady Maria (RPA – Private Seniors’ Residence)no longer considered an outbreak: Forty-four residents and thirteen employees at Lady Maria tested positive for COVID-19. The Lady Maria residence is home to 130 individuals and nearly 45 employees work there.

New Carlisle Detention Centreno longer considered an outbreak: Forty-six inmates and eleven employees tested positive for COVID. Of those testing positive, eleven employees and forty-six inmate have recovered from the virus.

CHSLD New Carlisle – no longer considered an outbreak: Eighteen employees and fifteen residents were affected by this outbreak. Five residents from the CHSLD New Carlisle passed away as a result of COVID-19. CHSLD New Carlisle houses 66 residents and employs 118 people.

Chandler Hospital – no longer considered an outbreak: Less than five employees tested positive.

Gaspé Hospital outbreak – no longer considered an outbreak: Nine employees tested positive and less than five patients were affected by this outbreak. One patient passed away as a result of COVID-19.

Centre d’hébergement Mgr-RossMulti-Services Sectorno longer considered an outbreak: Less than 5 employees tested positive for COVID-19. The CISSS states that this part of the facility has a multifunctional purpose.

Manoir St-Augustin outbreakno longer considered an outbreak: Sixty-eight residents and thirty-six employees of Manoir St-Augustin, a private seniors’ residence (RPA) tested positive for COVID-19. Seven residents passed away as a result of COVID-19.

CHSLD Mgr-Ross Gaspé CHSLD outbreakno longer considered an outbreak: Less than five employees and six residents tested positive for COVID-19. Two residents passed away as a result of COVID-19.
